My Thick Accent Podcast

As part of my work, I get to speak to many people who are new to Canada. It’s an honour to get to hear their stories.

This spring, I was introduced to Gurasis Singh, who has made a podcast to share and cherish those stories.

His work “explores the beauty of diversity in each accent, celebrating the common threads that unite us all. As he often says, ‘Let’s know each other Beneath The Accent,’ and together, let’s build a world that celebrates our shared humanity.

I was honoured to his guest for Episode 33. I’ve shed my childhood accent from the Canadian prairies, and I’m not a newcomer to Canada, so I was a bit of an atypical guest. He named the episode “We are Co-creating Canadian Identity” based on the threads of my story and why Canadian immigration is such a valued part of my personal and professional life.

You can access Episode 33 here.

Gurasis lives in Montreal, so we didn’t have the chance to meet in person until last week, while on a work trip to Toronto. We had such a great real-life meet-up while I showed him some of my favourite architectural sites in downtown Toronto. I also wore my Montreal t-shirt that depicts my favourite bagel-maker in Montreal: Fairmount Bagel.

Congratulations Gurasis on a prolific first year: 52 episodes in 52 weeks! Give his podcast a listen—and maybe reach out if you’re interested in sharing your story on a future episode!
